Description:
This was a rapid game that had to be created in a week, with the only limitations being to have a loop and to apply the title somehow.
What did I do:
- I programmed everything.
- Iterated on it several times.
- Added the light mask to increase difficulty.
- All of the art.
Challenges:
This one didn’t have too many challenges, the main challenge was being in October 2022 my knowledge in programming was still somewhat limited, I had made a couple of games at this point but both of those were extremely limited in scale and scope.
For this one I wanted to try something unique on the where’s wally and 2d click interactable game formula. And I had recently watched a documentary about ant mimicry and thought I could make it into a game.
There was a last minute challenge which was hooking up the sprite jars (open and closed/captured), but I did figure it out and got it in just in time, and I think a little thing like that adds a little more charm to the game itself.
I also got a little iteration time in there, by getting a couple of people to play it and as such I was able to tweak the difficulty a bit, and the animation shift rate, to make the spider ants and the ants a very tiny bit more easier to tell apart without effecting the design of the game. I also through further iteration added an analogous colour scheme where red was the main colour and orange was used to accent some of the ants.
This game has potential as a mobile game, however I think it should stay as a desktop game for the near future, as for the target audience I think aiming for a casual puzzle solving market is best, and I tried to keep the game within that group by not having any timers so they can play at their own speed and hopefully solve it at their own speed.
If I was to add a further point I would probably limit the amount of times a player can click as a lose condition to prevent spam clicking, but otherwise I quite liked this game and its simplistic style. Was very well scoped but still lacked audio.
